Sales of fluorescent tubes will end on 24.8.2023! Convert them to LEDs!

The use of mercury has been phased out since 2006 and the change also affects the lighting sector. The disappearance of fluorescent tubes is the result of the RoHS Directive, which is now being phased in after a long transition period to prevent mercury in light bulbs from entering the environment and is also a substance that is dangerous to humans.

T8 and T5 fluorescent tubes will be phased out on 24.8.2023 and replaced by LED tubes

It is estimated that there are around eight million fluorescent light bulbs in use in Finland, so there is a lot of replacement work ahead. Now is a good time to look to the future. LEDs will always be more energy efficient than old fluorescent bulbs, so switching will save both the environment and money!

Replacing old fluorescent tubes with LED tubes is possible, but the replacement may also require changes to the luminaire body. When replacing a fluorescent lamp with an LED tube, it must be compatible with the lamp ballast.

So what are the benefits of switching to LEDs?

In many respects, an LED lamp is a better light source than a fluorescent tube. They light up quickly without flickering, and produce a pleasant, even light that is pleasant to the human eye. LEDs are much more adjustable than fluorescent lamps and last about five times longer than conventional fluorescent lamps.

Replacing fluorescent lighting with LED tubes will bring significant savings on your electricity bill! LED tubes do cost more, but their luminous efficiency is significantly higher. Led fluorescent tubes also have the advantage that they can be integrated into an intelligent lighting control system, which again results in direct savings in energy consumption.

When replacing fluorescent tubes, take into account the compatibility with the replacement light source and check that the other parts of the luminaires are in good condition. In many cases, old luminaires are reaching the end of their useful life or the designed parts do not match, especially if the room is occupied by luminaires from different eras. In many cases, the best option is to replace all fluorescent tubes with LEDs, which may well reduce the number of luminaires, ensure longer life and design the most energy-efficient lighting possible.
