Case Study: Housing Fair - Casambi at Home and at School

Two very different Casambi projects are being showcased at this year’s Lempäälä Housing Fair. One of them is a single-family home, Casa Onnenkivi, where the lighting enhances living comfort and supports people’s natural circadian rhythms. Although the projects are different, they share a common goal: lighting and its control must serve the purpose of the space and support the well-being of its users.

What is Casambi?

Casambi is a wireless lighting control system that allows for flexible lighting control without the need for a separate centralized control system. The system can be connected to lights, buttons, sensors, and automation devices that work together via a Bluetooth Mesh network.

Wired DALI lights can also be connected to the Casambi system using Casambi Salvador DALI controllers. This allows both Casambi Ready devices and DALI lights to be used within the same system.

With Casambilla, you can, for example:

• dimming and changes in the color temperature of the lighting

• Various lighting scenarios, either manually controlled or scheduled

• motion detection and presence-based controls

• timing controls and automation

The solution is suitable for both homes and large properties, and can be integrated into other building automation systems as needed.

Casambia is used at airports, in hospitals, homes, offices, churches, public spaces, and for outdoor lighting.

Human-Centered Lighting (HCL) in a Single-Family Home

The single-family home exhibit at the Housing Fair utilizes Human Centric Lighting (HCL). In addition to traditional lighting control, Casambia is used to create indoor lighting that adapts to people’s natural circadian rhythms.

In the morning, the light is brighter and cooler, which promotes alertness and helps synchronize the body’s internal clock. As evening approaches, the lighting gradually becomes warmer and dimmer, which helps you wind down at the end of the day.

This is how lighting supports sleep quality, recovery, and alertness throughout the year.

In nature, the amount and color temperature of light change throughout the day. Human-centered lighting recreates this same natural variation.

Casambi Pro in Public Spaces

As a facility grows, so do its lighting control requirements. Casambi Pro is designed specifically for large facilities with many identical rooms. Typical applications include schools, hotels, offices, and nursing homes.

One of the most significant advantages of Casambi Pro is the ability to replicate pre-configured room setups.

For example, if lighting fixtures, sensors, buttons, lighting scenes, and automation have been configured in one classroom, the same setup can be copied to all similar classrooms. This same approach works just as well for hotel rooms, office spaces, and other recurring types of spaces.

This speeds up implementation, reduces the likelihood of errors, and makes managing large projects significantly more efficient.

Another advantage of Casambi Pro is the ability to do most of the programming in advance at the office. This reduces the amount of programming that needs to be done on-site, which speeds up commissioning and simplifies project management.

Casambi Pro allows you to program lighting in advance and replicate spaces. This significantly speeds up the work, as similar spaces can be quickly and efficiently integrated into the wireless control system on-site after the electrical installation is complete.

Casambi Pro and Salvador controllers were used at Saikantalo

The new Saikantalo in Lempäälä is a modern school and daycare center where special attention has been paid to the quality of the learning environment. In a facility like this, lighting plays an important role in the well-being and comfort of both the children and the staff.

With Casambi Pro, lighting control was implemented efficiently while preserving the flexibility of the spaces for the future. Thanks to the wireless system, changes can be made flexibly without requiring major modifications to the control system.

Casambi Salvador DALI controllers are also used at Saikantalo. They allow the property’s wired DALI lights to be integrated into the Casambi Pro system. The DALI lights can then be programmed, grouped, and controlled individually in the same way as Casambi Ready lights.

This solution enables a hybrid network in which wireless Casambi Ready devices and wired DALI lights operate as a single integrated system. This provides flexibility, particularly in large facilities where lighting and control solutions may vary from room to room.

Salvador makes it possible to integrate DALI lights into the Casambi network, allowing the entire system to be controlled wirelessly.

Smart lighting control supports future energy efficiency requirements

Requirements for the energy efficiency of buildings are evolving in Europe. The EPBD Directive guides efforts to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, and the EED Directive emphasizes energy efficiency and the monitoring of energy use.

Saikantalo’s Casambi Pro solution supports the achievement of these goals with regard to lighting. Lighting can be controlled based on need, occupancy, operating hours, and lighting conditions. This ensures that lights are not left on unnecessarily, and the use of spaces can be adjusted flexibly even at a later date.

Smart lighting control provides a solid foundation for meeting future requirements in energy efficiency, automation, and the changing usage scenarios of buildings.

In 2026, the Housing Fair will be held in the Saika area of Lempäälä from July 10 to August 9, 2026.
